Approx where in Ga are you located.

What is the variety of garlic you planted - Softneck or Hardneck or some other.

I am relatively new at growing garlic so I can't really help you. This is the third year I have grown garlic and the only year I have gotten the garlic to bulb up and had a great harvest. The difference between this year and previous years is that I planted my garlic in October and harvested it a couple of weeks ago.

If you planted the garlic about 6 or 7 weeks ago, that would be the last week in April of first of May. That is way too late planting garlic, even if you are planting in the spring and not in the previous fall. I guess it does depend where you are located though. I would think that it was also too late to plant shallots and onions.

Garlic needs to be planted in fall time. It needs to over winter to produce bulbs ;)

Get your hands on some good fat garlic cloves, and toss them in the ground late October. You want to pull them in late spring early summer after the plant begins yellowing pretty good. I just pulled mine, and I got a lot of wonderful fat bulbs this year.

The bigger the clove you plant, the bigger bulb will be :)

Thanks to the both of you. I live in zone 8a in Georgia. I planted the garlic by the directions on the packet. It said to plant after the last frost (or something similar). Maybe I just should have waited until winter gets here. The garlic still looks about the same, but the shallots and onion are doing really well. I'll have to update some pics for an update. Please feel free to give me any advice. I am completely open to any suggestions as this is completely new to me!

Neither garlic nor onions need frost protection!

Garlic is planted in the fall even in very cold climates like Ohio, Pa. , NY, etc.

Way down here in SW Ga., I plant my onion plants in Nov & Dec. I just finished harvesting my bulbs last week. They are now curing in the shad.

I've had a few that died, so I pulled them up. The bulbs were very small. I think I'm just going to plant more this fall. Hopefully, I will have better luck this time around.
