Fruit Tree

Hello Everyone,
I would like to grow a fruit tree in a big pot and if needed eventually move it to the ground. I wanted to get something that grows very fast. From my research, two are peach and cherry. I live in Vancouver, Canada. Is that a good place for either of the trees to grow? If not, do you have any suggestions (other than apple or pear). And if I can grow it fine here, I prefer to choose cherry. What type of cherry is the delicious, sweet, large darker colour ones? Any advice helps.

Cherry and especially peach are iffy fruit crops west of your local mountains. Princeton-Penticton area is far better. Of course there are individual trees in Vancouver that do OK with luck. Cherry varieties that resist splitting when wet (rain) are best. Bing is one type of dark sweet cherry. Peaches will require a lot of spraying for various problems. Transferring a tree from a pot to the ground may set it back one year--perhaps you do not have available ground yet.

The fastest growing fruit trees I have are Mulberry,Alba/Rubra hybrids,not the Nigra(Black),which is comparatively slower. Brady

Bing needs to be pollinated. It is not self fruitful.

Figs do great in containers. Check the figs4fun forum (google it) there are a few growers in vancouver on that forum that can recommend varieties for you, and maybe give you a cutting or air layer of their plant.

I live close to Vancouver but towards east Abbotsford, where the temperature could get 3 to 5 celsius higher than Vancouver. I grow successfully peach (PF lucky 13), Fig (desert king, brown turkey) Cherry (bing, stella, lapin) all of them in ground. Fig grows fast and dont require much care. Cherry do require care. I dont spray them except copper (bardeaux) spray for peaches for PLC. I have couple of more figs but not yet planted in ground.

My problem is I am renting, yet I am using the landlords space to learn gardening. I would prefer to grow something in a big pot. If it looks nice, even better. What do you recommend? I am thinking between fig and cherry since the peach seems to be too much trouble as far as diseases and what not. I will take care of the cherry as I need to.

Either would work, short term anyway. Lapins are self-fertile cherries (developed in your area!) and the recommended variety in lieu of Bing for west of the Cascades (no splitting) and are a heavy textured, sweet, juicy black cherry. Just get one on a dwarfing rootstock for ease of care in a container.

Which fruit do you like to eat? Fig or Cherry? Fig is eaten fresh from the tree. Cherry fruit can last for few days. Taste wise I will go for fig because you dont get them in shops. Cherry is available plenty in stores.
