This year I winter sowed torpedo onions, "Rossa Lunga di Firenze" from Renee's Garden. They cal them onions, but size and usage seem more like shallots to me. They were pretty wispy and wimpy looking when I planted them out but they look great now.

Thanks, subk3, what zone are you in and when do you wintersow outside? BTW the Italian word for shallot is "scalogna" -- but the Rossa Lungha di Firenze are called "semi cipolla" (half onion?) on the Italian seed sites, such as Franchi. So how do they taste? More like a shallot or just a mild onion?

I'm in Middle Tn--technically 7a but the last two winters have been more like 6b. They were winter sowed and put outside Feb 1 and set out in the garden mid to late Apr. They were not particularly vigorous in their jug. I wasn't very optimistic when I transplanted them as they were threadlike and just a few inches tall, but they weren't doing much and I was ready to get the jugs off the porch!

I have no idea of the taste as this is my first year to try them--first year to grow any onion from seed! I'm very omptimistic now as I think they look pretty good:
