Taking the light fixture off of the fans will certainly help. I hate the type of lighting that fans provide-not very good. If in your budget, have an electrician install some recessed cans in the room for lighting and keep the fans to circulate the air.

Ok, yes, I don't like the light provided by these fixtures. They shine in my face and I think have been giving me headaches. Good to know the other fixtures aren't that great either!

I hate globe lights on ceiling fans. Don't understand why they are so popular.

We have ceiling fans but I will only use a dome light with them.

Hubby is wrong in this case. Those ugly fans are ruining an otherwise pretty room. Work harder to convince him they have to go :)

I'd love to get rid of them, haha. Warm climate though, even the brand new houses have one fan in the living room. I'm worried not having at least one would be a turn-off if we sell? What if I just reduce it to 1 in the center of the room?

Like suggested if you change these to 3 or 4 blade fans with no light kit (or one light that is flush) it will make a world of difference. We need our fans and did that and it was a giant improvement. Ours are from fanimation. Minka and the modern fan company are nice too.

Ceiling fans have come a long way since the ones you have were installed. Do some research for a new design! Try living with just one fan for a week before you ditch one!

yep we need our fans here in Texas. you can buy replacement blades at Lowe's and home Depot plus different light kits. so you could lighten the color of the fan.

Big Ass Fans, yeah it really is their name, have gotten some really great reviews, so maybe you need only one. I had tall ceilings so I did not really get enough air moving, went to old fashioned, never looked back, waiting for my whole house fan, had one of those once, 2 story town house, set in wall of staircase, extended fan season by at least 2 months!

I think you should consider rewiring for one fan. Your space doesn't look that large and I know that my fan, when the AC is on and the air hits it wrong, will vibrate and make noise. Can't imagine how 2 large fans operate together! While you're having that done, you can had a couple of pot lights as well.

P.S. I know a lot of decorators don't like them but they are a necessity regardless. Don't get rid of them altogether.

we changed the lights on all our fans to dome lights. We don't use the lights usually preferring table and floor lamps. The domes are more attractive and the fans sure are appreciated in the summer months.

Janadiane, question for you.... I like the look of the above light kit. Are these pretty generic? Can you pop any light kit on any fan? Like you I rarely use the light on my ceiling fan and mine isn't that bad - white with 4 lights but they are plain metal, not fru-fru glass - but if I wanted to change them for the single, do I need something specific to that fan (which is really old but works like a charm) or can I use just about any kit?

The top of the light kit needs to mate up with the bottom of the fan so you'll need to measure them. They are pretty generic and easy to find at most home improvement stores. Try to find a light kit made by the same company as fan. As long as it fits it is fine, however. The school house globe isn't fru-fru and adds a little more character. I have a ceiling fan like the one above with a schoolhouse white glass globe. Hope this helps.

I replaced the fans with white flushmount fans. The fans have no lights. I put a small light on the ceiling and am adding another floor lamp. It looks much nicer. Thanks so much!
