Yes, I would create a larger island, but not until I was ready for an overhaul of the whole kitchen, including the flooring.

The black compliments the existing flooring and backsplash. When you are ready to change it all at one time, make the larger island and define the flooring to work.

What is your budget for this? Were you planning on changing all the flooring? Where is the place located, region-wise?

I agree but the island you have is just odd and is not shown in the floor plan you posted and also no pillar in the drawing.To me the layout as is is awkward but I would need a lot more info. Is this a stand alone home for instance .The drawing needs to show all the windows and in the kitchen every measurement clearly marked not just the overall and that pillar needs to be shown.

Consider removing the island as it looks like it is in an awkward spot.

Also - where is the kitchenette.

IMO the flooring clashes with the cabinets. The white is a cool color but the floors are warm. It's too bad the previous owners put what look like new cabinets on top of that floor. What you do will depend on your budget. It is frequently a mistake to do piecemeal changes. That's how you ended up with cool white cabinets on a beige floor. Better to wait until you have the funds to do everything you want at once. Live in the house for a while and see how everything grows on you (or doesn't).

I wouldn’t make the island larger until you have a measured plan showing the column, appliances, walkways and kitchenette. A large island could work well, but only if it improves the flow.

Since you’re just moving in, I would live with the kitchen for a little while before deciding. Then you can plan the island, flooring and countertops together.

Impossible to advise without a to scale floor plan showing every window , doorway where those leade and every measurement clearly marked . posted her in a comment in jpeg format the lots of ideas will come . Make sure you draw in that post it will drive many ideas

The little dash that is on the floorplan is the place of the column.
