need help with deadheading "may night"

I'm a bit of a newbie with gardening and I'm a bit stumped with how to deadhead my may night salvia. do I cut each finished flower spike individually right down to the base foliage? or just to the end of the flower spike? should I just take a shear to the whole thing? Please let me know what works best. thanks!

just to the end of the flower spike-you should be able to see where the new spikes are beginning. when those are finished you can cut back pretty hard and get some bloom in late summer.

i just trimmed my east friesland seedlings a few days ago and they are almost ready to bloom again. it is, however, very hot here.
