We've done it before for clients...seemed to work pretty well. Don't use the pedestal drawer below the dryer. The instrument panel on the dryer is reversible.. On the model we installed, the instrument panel could be mounted at the bottom and was more accessible.

I just looked at some today to replace my old ones that are side by side. I am going to keep them side by side after I realized I would need to move the dryer vent to the same side as washer. Also I am short and I was unable to reach completely into the back of the dryer at that height. Getting those pesky single socks that stick in the back would be a problem.

Definitely consider having the dryer instrument panel reversed so you can access it easier.
