MAPLE FLOORING...best option?

It is now time to choose the wood flooring that will span the entire first floor of my new home. Toughest decision for me thus far! I am an extremely visual person...one of the many reasons that I adore HOUZZ...however I just can't narrow this one down. My home is generally transitional but with many contemporary details. It is filled with cool tones and clean lines as I am attempting a serene environment. I will tweak the color a bit as I love ebony stained flooring. Light gray walls...heavy white trim...white cabinetry...2 stairs great room. That being said...should the floor flow with this feel or anchor it with some warmth and depth. Please advise...

Option #1: Select Maple
Simple, least expensive, scratches and dents will show easily, can be refinished

Option #2: Character Maple (knots visible)
More character, mid-range price, should camouflage blemishes better, can be refinished

Option #3: Hand-scraped Maple
By the most character, most expensive, easy to blend scratched, cannot be refinished, too rustic?

I'm thinking if u want darker wood go with something other than maple. And never pick something that can not be refinished. Good luck! I'm having my floors done next week!

I'm torn between option #2 and #3. I love the character of #3 Hand-scraped Maple. I don't think it would be too rustic as it would balance out your contemporary details (I like a unique look). But, if it came down to cost, I would go with option #2.

I think I would go for number 2 because it can be refinished. Both 2 and 3 are very pretty.

I don't have mable floors but I chose hand scraped floors for my home for more practical reasons. I have two kids and the texture helped them when they were learning to walk, and I have in laws visits as well. Any scratches are super easy to disguise. My decor is also relatively modern and floors tone it down a little and gave it a more friendly feeling.

If #3 is in the mix; would it a bad thing that #1 or #2 would scratch overtime? It could eventually look like #3, at a lesser cost! :) My note on #3 would be regarding all the nooks and crannies that catch everything you track in -- and it holds onto it, making for a little more work than a smoother finish.

I voted for #2, but I did have hand scraped oak floors in my last house. It was no harder to take care of than any other floor.

I still like #2 better for you. ;-)

I am fortunate enough to have access to many amazing local craftsmen...and women;-) The wood pictured here is locally prepped and all 3 samples have been finished with the same custom blend. For me...the main attraction to #3...a truly "hand-scraped" wood...is the feeling of true artistry that it projects. Definitely a labor of love! Thank you all for your thoughts...much appreciated!
