Swamp azalea? I said that because mine just started blooming.

That was my thought as well, swamp azalea, Rhododendron viscosum. I was introduced to this plant (the pink form) at a late winter flower show, and even under forced conditions, the scent managed to out-compete the strong scent of mulch. I can testify that it grows well in damp conditions as I planted one on the edge of a pond where the water level fluctuates and it is quite happy.

Or, possibly, one of Weston Azaelas. Some have Viscosum parentage and are very fragrant. I have "Lollipop" which is pink. The scent is almost cloying.

Did you ever feel the flowers of R. viscosum? They are sticky, this one is not. I am leaning toward R. arborescens.

I really know very little about azaleas, but I went to the Weston site to look at Lollipop parentage. Perceptive of you to pick up on 'stickiness' as a clue.

Weston had a breeding program that focused on developing very hardy rhodies and azaelas., such as Purple Gem and a series of summer blooming "Lights" azaleas. I'm going look there and see if yours happens to be one of theirs.

Thought I'd give this a bump up. If indeed your plant is Weston's "Innocence" it might be available from some nurseries and you could get it for your own garden!
