I am planning the layout of a new laminate flooring in my home, but I am running into a dilemma in which direction to lay the floor. I have heard that you should either lay the floor parallel to the direction light enters the room or perpendicular to the direction of the floor joists.

In my situation I have to chose one of those schools of thought, but I can't decide which one. To make things more complicated, the longest wall runs parallel to the floor joists, but also the room is oddly shaped. lastly, the stairs will also be covered in the same flooring and they can only be layer in one direction (parallel to the light entering).

I have attached a rough sketch of the area in question (sorry for the extreme lack of scale). Any advice would be appreciated.
