Suggestions for small circular bed

last modified: 11 years ago

Hi all, I have a small circular bed with an exterior brick path and a gazing globe in the center. the planting space is about 6 feet in diameter. I was thinking of combining DA Princess Anne and Bolero but don't know if this would look too spotty. Both are similar in size and both have the old rose look. I have 3 of each which I think would work for the 18 foot circumference. This garden is within a larger garden all surrounded by a picket fence. Any suggestions are appreciated

Thanks so much.

As long as they both have similar growth habits I think it would be gorgeous!

Thanks Seil, I posted a pic of the WRONG rose, Queen Anne, gorgeous Austin but not even available here!!. I have Princess Anne. She's darker pink so I'm not sure if it would be too much contrast between the two making it look too spotty. However, I have three of each so the spacing would work.

I like pink and white together so I still think it would be pretty!

Thanks Seil for the vote of confidence. It can always be moved :-) if it doesn't work out. I don't know if the Princess Anne will even flower this year. I bought them and DA Tranquility Rose as bare root from Wayside's sale in late May. They are leafing out pretty quick but still have a ways to go. The Boleros were purchased from RU this year and have already flowered. I love, love, love Bolero. I have 2 from HD purchased last year. The flowers are gorgeous and plentiful, scent is intoxicating and she's almost disease free. Plus the two from HD survived the brutal winter we had in their pots sunk in the ground. She has DA parentage, Sharifa Asma, so that might explain the lovely scent and old fashioned form.

Thanks Sharon. If Princess Anne flowers this year I'll definitely post some pics.

Another rose that I overlooked completely is Kordes First Crush. Softest pink blooms and according to HMF and Peter Kukielski stays around 3 x 2 feet so similar in size to Bolero. I think this one might work even better since Bolero tends to have a bit of blush as well.

I have 3 of First Crush too. I think this might be the winner. Disease resistance, wonderful scent and excellent repeat plus small size.

First Crush is lovely also--but I probably would not pair it with Bolero, but maybe that is just my taste in colors. Too blah and boring for me--I like a little more drama, plus Princess Anne is such a gorgeous rose. I like your first idea best (Bolero and Princess Anne), but others might like a more subtle shading moving from Bolero to First Crust. Perhaps the more subtle colors work better with the theme of the gazing ball--but I still would not have the heart to omit Princess Anne. But that may just be me. : )

Another possibility is two of each rose: white- pink- white/pink blend- white - pink- white/pink blend.

Looking forward to pics--of the whole garden also. What I can see in that corner is very attractive.

hmmm Kate, now you have me thinking that maybe I should go a little bold and unusual. The outer bed that this smaller bed is in is all DA's. Opposite corners have Darcy Bussel, front corner St. Cecelia and back corner Windermere and then others further back since the bed is not square. In the furthest corner closest to the porch is a small pink/white panicle hydrangea plus assorted perennials mixed in.

Have you grown her or seen the flower? In some pics she looks more magenta in others more lavender in others a deep clean pink. Do you know her true color? How is Princess Anne for thorns? Not too bad? There don't seem to be too many on the larger canes. These are still not fully leafed out since I bought them from Wayside's end of season sale but I have read great reviews on her. Hopefully I'll get one flush of flowers before winter. :-)

Why not put all three. Bolero and First Crush and Princess anne. That way you have pink, light pink and white. :)

I've only seen pictures of Princess Anne, but here is how David Austin describes her color:

" The young flower is deep pink, almost red, gradually fading to a pure deep pink as the bloom matures. The undersides of the petals have a pleasing hint of yellow."

I personally like roses that go through a series of color changes. Molineux is another Austin rose that can bloom anything from apricot pink and cream to golden apricot and bright yellow to mellow yellow and cream. Fun to see what color it will be each day.

No lavender in Princess Anne, according to DA. However, other sources mention the attractive lavender-purple shades the blooms pick up as the bloom ages.

One virtue Princess Anne has that is very important in my garden--it is rated as "very disease resistant." She also seems to be a really good bloomer.

If I had any room left in my garden, this is one rose for sure that I would plant.

I'm looking forward to those pics!

SoFLRose10, thanks for the suggestion. I didn't want to use 2 of 3 different roses since I tend to plant in couples or threes. This way I'll still have 3 First Crush left.

Kate~ I went with your and Seil's suggestion: 3Princess Anne, 3 Boleros. Now I'll just have to wait until they flower. The growth on the PA is still pretty minimal. These have only been potted for about 3 weeks, but they are growing nicely, sending out lots of shoots. The Boleros already have flowered and have set a second flush of buds so these should be flowering in about a month. I hope PA flowers at least once so I can see her color. Even DA's pictures look lavenderish in the catalog, so I'll just have to wait and see. Everyone raves about the prolific bloom, hardiness and disease resistance so she does sound like a winner!
I will post some pics when the garden is finished :-)
