Look up 'how to train shrub as a standard' in Google. Generally, if the plant allows it, you'll train only one upright stem and tie it to a tall stake. You'll trim off all other branches. Some plants cannot develop a strong enough trunk to support a cluster at the top. Some can and others can only with time, or with continuous staking.

It's a pity it has already got two branches. Standards are easier to train from a single unbranched cutting. You'll need to choose one of the branches to be the leader and tie it quite severely to a vertical stake to get it growing straight up. It will always have a kink in the trunk. You'll then need to persistently rub off any side buds until the trunk gets to 6 feet. Then cut it. I don't know this particular species. You say it is a compact cultivar. Is it capable of growing to 6 feet?

expectations and concerns about it.

Extremely low percentage of cuttings of this even root,
and I think that only tip cuttings ever have rooted.
Tip twigs form a bowl shape, twig in center always soon dies. Thus,
multiple-branch saplings are inevitable, because cutting would be
too severely compromised if all minus one twigs initially were removed.
Twigs are very thin. Leaves are small, few, and most soon drop.

On your advice, now I will clip off one of the branches.

Ok, I pruned many of the little H. patens var. glabra plants.

I am uncertain of which branch of the following would be better to keep:

Train up the most flexible and/or longest one. Tie it up loosely. Over a period of weeks you may be able to straighten it more by applying more pressure to the ties. Be sure you don't strangle the stem though.

And clip off A, right?

You can leave 'A' for now, just in case branch B is damaged in the process of staking it! Take things slowly! I have no idea how flexible or brittle these branches are. If you over-bend a brittle branch, it can break on you. I also do not know how quickly these plants grow. If they are not vigorous, it may need branch A to supply needed nutrients.

Branch B should become dominant as it is raised and trained up. If branch B works out, then you can prune out A.
