Is the main stem getting the sunburn. Leaves?

If you don't have leaves to protect the branches and main stem, you will get sunburn. You can use aluminum foil to protect the stem.. I also rotate my trees in the direct sun as well. That will help.

I wouldn't worry so much about watering if they are dry and its actively In It's growing cycle ... especially if you have a fast draining mix. I water at least twice a weak. You also have to remember if they are really dry and you water fast, the water will drain right out and not allow the soil to soak up the needed moisture in your soil. Water isn't a bad thing in the summer.. They don't like to sit in it and get wet feet ( avoiding root rot), but if you water, then go back and water again lightly , It will help to make the container and or rootball more evenly saturated.. If you water fast. And do a quick pass.. it doesn't gets into the soil . it can just run through the soil and not allow proper saturation for the tree. I would do this to my trees. I also do this before I fertilize so that I won't burn roots.. ( I'm using containers). I can lift the container and feel if its light.. Then I water.. If it is heavy and i can tell that it has moisture, i won't water.. You can use a water meter to check or use a wooden skewer to check moisture levels.. If you stick the dowel in the soil down to the rootball area and the wooden skewer is dry, water.. If it is damp or wet, don't water..

Try and avoid watering during the hot times of the day.. This could cause leaf burn as well.. I like to water in the morning .. To me its is the best or in the late afternoon around sunset.

Also be careful of the Clear water bottle containers in the direct sun. they can magnify the suns rays and burn even more!!

You could always add more soil to the top so it can't get the magnification..

I just wanted to clarify that I was talking about watering when you have roots .. You are more than welcome..

If you are still trying to get roots on a new cutting, you can mist or give a little water around the rim. " just a little". Every 7-10 days When I reread this post I noticed you didn't say the others were fully rooted, so I just wanted to mention that if you are rooting, bottom heat is the best.. Cuttings can be protected from Direct sunlight to prevent burn.. When rooting.. A little water at the beginning and mist only if you see signs of it needing moisture . Once you have roots, you can water when dry like I mentioned above.. Bottom heat on cuttings is the key to rooting!!
