Rapid Leaf Loss on Fig Tree

Hi everyone, I live in Westchester County, NY, and this summer am keeping my 1.5yr old fig tree in a community garden near my apartment. It's been doing great so far, or so I thought. It's had some curling up in the leaves but I had read that there wasn't anything I can do about that and the bug causing it would eventually work it's way through.

I went back to the garden today to check on the fig and was shocked to find that it had lost all its leaves except 4 or 5, as you can see from the before and after photos included below. Has anyone experienced this? Is it possible to bring back? Could it have to do with the amount of water? Or inconsistent watering? It's been raining frequently over the past few weeks so I haven't worried about watering it.

I'd really hate to lose her. Thanks for any help or ideas!
