Wow! That is a remarkable collection. At http://www.heirlooms.org/planting-growing-and-saving-seeds.html Bill Best says the he plants 2 seeds together every 18 inches for an average of 9 inch spacing. Twelve inch spacing is a good average for most beans.

Here in the PNW, Red Eye Fall branches very heavily with a new vine taking off from each leaf base. So 12 inch spacing will produce a very dense mass of vines. Flamingo also produces dense foliage.

I plant Tobacco Worm every year and they do fine at two seeds together a foot apart.

Some people consider Striped Cornfield to be a half runner with most of the beans near the bottom of the vine. Here it is a standard pole bean with light foliage so one plant every six inches like Fortex or Emerite would work.

Cowpeas generally should be at 3 per foot of row. Agree with drloyd re the rest of the recommendations. I would spread Super Marconi at least 12 inches between plants, it is very vigorous in my experience.

A couple of corrections... Golden Lima is a regular pole bean, not a lima. It is very similar/identical to Dolloff. Brita's Foot Long is also a common pole bean, not a cowpea. Both of those do well at 12" spacing.

If you planted at 6" spacing, was that single seeds, or hills? For single seeds, depending upon germination rates, you may not even need to thin. Some varieties are more or less vigorous, but anything between 6-12" for most common beans will work. If you live in a wet or humid climate, though, you may want to use the wider spacing to reduce the chances of disease.

The only exceptions I see to the 12" rule would be Soissons Vert and Goldmarie, which I would recommend for 6" spacing. Grandma Roberts did very well for me last year when thinned to 2 @ 12". I agree with Drloyd's comments on Flamingo, it grew very densely for me even at 12" spacing between plants. And while Fortex does better at 6" spacing, Fusion's Fortex cross might be more vigorous... maybe he will weigh in on that.

The cowpea 21 Peas gets very long vines, and is best trellised. I let it trail last year, and some of the vines were 6-8 feet long. Red Ripper, I have been told, is very similar. While I agree with Fusion's general recommendation on cowpea spacing, you might want to give 21 Peas more space (I use 12-15").

Most runner beans I've grown do well at 12" spacing. When I grew
Insuk's Wang Kong last year, I used 15" spacing between plants, and the
trellis was completely covered. I am experimenting with 2@15 this year
for Gigandes, and the growth to date seems to indicate that may be too
dense, and 1@15" is probably optimal. I just haven't got the heart to
kill one of the two, when both have already reached the top of the
trellis.

I concur with 24" as a good starting point for limas. Some of the more vigorous varieties can be spaced up to 36" apart, especially in areas with a longer growing season. When I lived in SoCal, I used that spacing for King of the Garden. From the posts I've read here, Black Jungle might need more room also... hopefully someone who has grown it will weigh in with their experiences.

I plan on growing Violet's Multi-colored limas next year, so Happydog, I am looking forward to your observations (it was bumped this year by Mav72's Filipino lima).
