Very lovely Thyme, we are in the grip of a heat wave here, water restrictions we've never seen before. Nothing worth taking a photo of at present, just trying to keep things alive sooooo, I'll just have to get the eye candy from everyone else's gardens for now :).

Beautiful as always. What a view to wake up to.

So very pretty. We have had tons of rain. I dare not even try to weed as the ground is so saturated and after the thunderstorm last night, puddles abound. No walking anywhere for at least a few days. I am not happy about not gardening, but love having the rain. Hope it continues through August!

The renovation is quite a success - the garden is gorgeous! I particularly love the delphiniums.

Thanks, everyone! It was well worth the investment to install a new fence with a different style arbor. We love the new fence! And with the new fence came the new design which is a bit more refined. The cottage garden before was definitely a bit more wild.

I used to have a rose garden when we first moved in, but I think I made the mistake of planting more "fussy" roses. I'm trying to work towards bringing in more roses and clematis but some using of the easier roses.

Oooh....pretty, pretty, pretty! That's literally what I just said, when I saw your picture :)

I'll have to show this to my mom. She's going to love it and wants to do something similar with her white lattice fence and arbor!

One rose that I've never had any trouble with and has very pretty pale lavender blooms....Snow Pavement (Rugosa Hybrid). I have four and just got one more. They stay about 3' tall and even the deer leave them alone....especially with a little lavender around them.

This picture (not mine) looks a little more pink, but mine are more lavender.

Absolutely gorgeous. Love your obelisks. The color is so pretty and looks lovely as a contrast to all of your beautiful flowers. For roses you might want to try Easy Elegance roses which are from Bailey Nursery in MN. The roses are rated hardy to zone 4a according to their website. Most don't have any fragrance but they are own root, super healthy and have some gorgeous flowers. Centennial came through our brutally cold snowy winter with no damage and has been flowering non stop since early June. They are own root, disease resistant, and very prolific. I just purchased Yellow Submarine another beauty with ruffled yellow blooms about 3 inches in diameter. Everyone raves about Macy's Pride, a soft yellow rose. You might want to check them out. They are pretty much bullet proof and seem much hardier than Knockout and way prettier and offer far more variety in color and flower style.
Centennial Rose

Hi Sharon, thanks for the info about Bailey Nursery. Nhbabs and I were just talking about own-root roses a couple days ago, so this is timely information. I plan on installing a rose garden outside the picket fence area next year. I've made a list of roses, but still have to investigate if they're grafted or not. Yellow Submarine is on my list!

So far I'm really liking yellow Submarine. It has a very faint scent, not a David Austin, but the flowers are very pretty, a nice size and it seems to be a strong bloomer. No black spot so far :-) in my no spray garden. Another one that wintered over really well is Bolero. She blooms almost non stop, no BS, stays fairly small, about 3 feet, and smells incredible. I loved her so much that I ordered 6 more this year from Roses Unlimited which sells own root roses. Even these tiny one year plants are putting out a lot of growth and a lot of blooms. She is probably my favorite rose for beauty of flower and heavenly scent. She's a seedling of DA Fair Bianca and unknown according to HMF and smells as delicious as the best Austin rose. Kordes has some nice roses too. Kordes "First Crush" is a blooming machine and smells really nice. I haven't had these overwinter yet though so I can't comment on their hardiness but my other Ki=ordes Roses do okay, some dieback, and I know Celestial Rose, a gardenweb member, has good success in her Z4 NH no spray garden. Actually her roses are to die for :-)

Bolero is gorgeous and I definitely want some roses in the whiter tones. I think I'll have room for about 16 and then a couple climbers. I don't spray any of my roses now and would like to keep it that way. I don't mind if I have some extra work with some winter protection, but it would be great to get some that don't require any special winter care. You're giving me lots of great ideas. We lean towards orange/yellow tones but I'm going to have a smattering of pink too. Looking forward to preparing the area this year......meaning digging out a perennial garden that is already in the space. I was never satisfied with this particular garden and my DH suggested a rose garden. He didn't have to twist my arm! But I'm not rushing into it so I can make sure my choices will be wise ones. I'll have a long, probably snowy winter to choose, order, etc.

We have had quite a nice fall turn this year up in New England. The colors have been very vivid as we drive around. I thought I'd update the view as it looked about a week ago. The difference in the angle of the sun is amazing.

I think everyone should find a nice big tree on which to grow a climbing hydrangea. Not only does it get amazing flowers, but the fall color is wonderful.

I like mixing peonies with asters. Sometimes asters get quite cruddy looking down low, but if planted behind peonies, the peony foliage hides that part very well.

Hope you are all having a wonderful fall. We're going to get a killing frost tonight (last night killed off probably 25% of the annuals......tonight I won't be a lucky! LOL)

T2D, I always like seeing your beautiful gardens. They do look good in fall as well as every other time of year. :-)

Virginia Creeper is a weed here, but this time of year it's pretty.

The bees are still making use of the Aconitum

Neighbor's Red Blaze Maple trees are not as bright red as they are some years but still nice.

Gorgeous fall color Thyme, we have Boston ivy on the house and Virginia creeper on one side of our fence but not much color yet. I did have a Schizophragma but after 16 or so years of not flowering it got shovel pruned. Love the asters with the peonies, that's giving me ideas :).
