It had gorgeous flowers, but way too much blackspot. I think it was one that shovel-pruned itself, saving us the bother. Too bad, since the flowers had a lot going for them.

Cuthbert Grant grows fine in my no spray zone 5 northeast Ohio garden. I have had it for many, many years. No blackspot to speak of. It is one of my first bloomers in the spring.

In my zone 4 garden, Cuthbert Grant did have lovely blooms sometimes, but was a less than satisfactory garden plant. I grew it for 15 years and it had severe die back every single winter and didn't seem to recover terribly well, which meant that it was always a short, scraggly shrub. It did get some blackspot, although not enough to totally defoliate. Also the blooms would get bruised or burned and end up with blackish areas (I see some of that in your photos.) It did not re-bloom that well, having two flushes in the year and that was it.
I chose to leave it behind when I moved.

Thank you for the info, it's very interesting to see the different experiences. I'm lucky to be in a low blackspot area. Yes, the blooms don't seem to like getting wet. Lol, I forgot the check HMF on this one, there is some great info there, more comments than compared to some other roses.

It's done blooming and in a leaf growth stage for me now. I hope it blooms again.
