She really likes the deeper shades of blue and red but could either work on this house ?

I like blue houses with white trim (although some realtors caution against them for resale). If down the line means 5+ years, you'd probably be repainting for resale anyways. In that case, paint it blue for your mother. If it's less, asking a local realtor would help. For example, if you're in a beach community or have brightly colored houses nearby, you will have more flexibility.

I like a medium shade of taupe with black trim.

Try Shaker Beige (BM) with either white or Dark Brown trim. But I love the Eagle Rock house above!!!
