Congrats; they are great machines. We should probably know what kind of engine is on yours. One might expect a Tecumseh engine, but the normal carburetor actually had an arrow shape for the choke lever. I think some also had Kohler engines, but I don't know anything about them.

Got some ideas about what levers do what and position to start. I'm now pretty sure I had throttle shut off instead of open wide. Will give it another try.

You are correct. Tecumseh with arrow shape choke lever. I'm guessing push direction arrow points for full choke?

Idle position you see there carb it's on linkage one wire kill wire I would unplug wire until get to fire up.

gator is likely correct. He is talking about a little loop of wire that connects to the metal engine. When the throttle cable (edited to indicate direction of cable rather than cable lever movement) up on the handle is pushed fully toward the engine, the throttle is (hopefully) closed and part of the throttle mechanism will touch that little wire loop. This will kill the engine if it was running and of course, you can't start it that way.

And now we know you probably have an H60 (I think it is called) engine. You should probably unscrew the bowl on the bottom of carb. and see if there is crud in there. I often find that a casual cleaning of the carb by taking it off and removing and cleaning the main jet (the thing that screws into the area where the bolt you remove to get the bowl off) and blowing area around that area will often do the trick. There is an idle air screw on side of carb. Gently screw it in and count the turns. It will probably be ~1.5 turns. Then take it out and clean and blow air and reinstall to the same number of turns out.

If you don't even get a pop, then something else may be wrong but if you do get some noise but no start, try idle screw half turn in or out and see if things get better. Did you say you checked the plug?
