Total living and dining room remodel

I've posted before but need help again. All has been redone. It's the decorating I'm not sure of. Thoughts? Dining room seems boring to me. Love the living room but needs something.

An area rug under the table with some color.

DR: I'd have 1 to 3 vases on the DR table that repeat the color(s) in the art. The vases do not need to have flowers, but that flowers always a nice touch. click photo

LR: I'd remove the side table to the left of sofa (as facing window) & place gold floor vase there. Floor vase might look nicer plain without flowers in it. The candlesticks that are on the side table might look nice on the coffee table.

I think that you need end tables and lamps. Overhead lighting is not very flattering.

I agree with Havingfun...you need to get rid of the blinds and use curtains.

Chandelier needs to be lowered, about 30" off table. It also seems to be competing with mirror. Stand in LR once it is lowered to decide where mirror should be. I'd also paint all those vents the wall color so they disappear.

Your home is lovely! I agree with havingfun... great bones here. My opinion you simply need to add some final details? Perhaps some added depth of color - bring in some lighter tones and textures (maybe wicker and glass or mirror in living room for texture). I also agree with the rug. I would either pull it out from fully under the couch/furniture or get larger size. Love the rug tho.

pops of color - additional texture in glass... maybe sconces on either side of large picture in LR in rubbed bronze OR a POP of color... you could spray paint in the orange from painting! fun!

Adding some texture and lighter tones with wicker and additional lighter palette (not white on walls! your walls are lovely) maybe through sheers instead of or in addition to blinds.

Dining Room: Get rid of the artificial ficus tree.

Center the pictures on the wall.

Put an interesting piece of pottery on the table, punch up the color of the runner, change the color of the upholstery on the stools and the dining chairs and PLEASE paint the duct returns to match the wall colors. PLEASE do that first and you'll see a change bigger than you ever expected! :)

    Warm Regards,

Maybe you should look online for larger scale art with color. (I won't provide art pieces since it is personal). You could do one large piece or two medium sized. If you go with two, place them exactly side by side. Remove the green tree. I know you just redid the space, but it is dark. I would try to find a really unique fixture to go over the table to replace the one that you have (you do not need anymore brown). Lastly, identify a small bowl or centerpiece that ties it all together. That runner should not be needed.

I would add an area rug under the dining room table that would bring some color to the space and paint the wall above the chair rail a lighter shade of the same color. Maybe update the light fixture and definitely lower it. Add color to the table and larger artwork on the wall.

As a temporary mock up, put your living room art in your dining room (remove the mirror and other art) and then look at the instant change! Then go find some art for the dining.

Great comments. Thank you all. The rug in living room is barely under the couch so I can't pill it out much. Great idea to change the cushion color of chairs. The light fixture is new so I don't think I wanna replace it again. I love the mirror in dining room but not the art. If I replace the art and get something bigger I thought it would compete with mirror if it was basically the same size. I will look for rug for under table and paint the vents! People before when I posted said not to get a tree but I thought it would be perfect there. I guess not. I cannot find a centerpiece I love anywhere! I love the sconces that were posted as Samples. Where can I get them? I will make some changes and repost!

Click the more info button next to each sconce description if you like those.
Also, while I like your mirror also, I think your chandelier "blends" with it too much (there is no distinction between the two). From my perspective, if one or the other was changed and utilized in another space in the home, you may start to move away from the "boring" feeling that you have about the space. Right now I just see a LOT of brown and/or darkness throughout all of the photos that can use a bit of punch. Best wishes to you on your updates! :-)

Would those sconces be ok in those colors? Gray, yellow and blue??

Just a little thing; I would paint out the air registers.

Your furniture is really nice and the paint color is great, too. Paint the registers the same color as the wall. There is a battle for visual attention going on between the chandelier, mirror and the tree. Remove the tree. Lower the pretty chandelier. Trade out the busy mirror with a rectangular, broad-framed mirror, horizontally hung to fill in the wall. Choose a simple, light colored bowl or centerpiece for the table. Finish up with a light, muted printed rug. Don't put a dark rug under dark furniture.

You won't recognize the room. It will appear larger, balanced, and welcoming.

ellenbrennan - :) not for my taste NO! I was thinking more along the lines of spray painting them orange (similar to what's in the painting behind couch) for a pop of color.

Hi ellen - I just read your other post about the sconces... click on "more info" under each picture and it sends you page where you can order online. They do have sort of a 'Pottery Barn' style to them. You could check there.

Since there are so many ventilation grilles in the dining area, I would paint them all the wall color to help them blend in more.

An abundance of excellent advice already given. Love your front door color and dark floors. What bothers me the most is the heavy fall color scheme--wonderful for October, but for summer I think you especially need to lighten up, bring in whites in the form of pillows or a table runner, seashells or lantern decor, etc.
