Look at the Travetine tumbled 3" x6" tile. Lots of earthy shades/ colors and looks beautiful with brown oak cabinets and granite countertops.

Travertine tile generally goes well with oak cabinets. I would add some black accents to it to pull in counter top color.

A lot depends on the color you paint the cabinets, but with black countertops and the formal border on your wood floors, I'd go with something classic and timeless like regular white subway tile; it never goes out of style, it's cheap, it's easy to clean, it goes with any wall color, and it's easy to replace a few tiles if you ever need to knock a hole in the wall.

I'd paint the cabinet crown the same color as the cabinets to unify the cabinet instead of it looking like an afterthought. Or perhaps remove the crown altogether and add another row of short glass-door cabinets on top that go all the way to the ceiling -- then put lights inside them. I'd also remove that valance over the sink window and replace that fluorescent light with some pendant lights. Also add under-cabinet (LED) and over-cabinet lights (rope-lights work well) if you can. I love having just the countertops and ceiling lit up instead of the whole kitchen.

Redoor the cabinets to a matching shaker style (very classic) and change the hardware to brushed stainless to match appliances. Change counter to something lighter and warmer. 3X6 subway tile in almond. You can add a feature strip on glass mosaics on the bottom for more interest. Stay in warm tones to pull it all together.

Funny how asking about a backsplash morphs into a reno. $500-800 versus 10-15K minimum.

Personally, I'd put in light colored subway, paint out the dark molding white and paint the walls white. Remove the molding from the bottom of the cabinets.

White subway tiles with dark grout. Paint the walls white. I'd leave the molding black for now.

I have similar color ways in my kitchen and used a copper color pressed tin look. There are lots of photos on line just Google "pressed tin backsplash". It appears lighter in this photo than it is. Since most people haven't seen it, everyone who comes into our kitchen comments on how they love it.
