Our neighbor has a windrow of those thuja giants - they look nice, are dense, and quite hardy. (they've lived thru 4 sets of renters - no care & kids running thru them)

Both Chamaecyparis (false cypress) and Cryptomeria (Japanese cedar) should be fine in central VA. There are zillions of species and cultivars of the chamy's so no worries about finding something of appropriate height. The crypts only have one species but again, many cultivars that will remain height-appropriate.
