Lucky Bamboo soil/water question

Hi All, I recently purchased a small Lucky Bamboo at a BBS, it is a Costa Farms product.

It was in a small red ceramic non draining pot. It had small gravel to the rim. I watered it

and kept it filled with water, just as I do with all my others. A stalk turned yellow, so I figured I would remove it. As I took off some of the gravel, I discovered that it was only top dressing and under neath was dirt or coir. No wonder I was having trouble. Has anyone

encountered this. Is this really a legitimate way to grow this plant? Soil medium in a non draining pot? The yellow stalk is now in a small glass jar with stones to anchor it and filled with water. The health stalks are back in the red pot without soil just anchor stones and water.
