It is nice to put your feet up, you can put a tray on it (to put stuff on), and if you have little kids they can't hurt their heads on sharp corners. Also, I would suggest an area rug to tie it all together, whatever you do its a great space!

I agree with the photo above. Looks great with chocolate brown. Are you planning anything on the wall above? The painting or whatever you choose could provide you with a third color to mix in (like they did in the photo).

I think ottomans are a great idea. Target has a couple of great ones that you can use by themselves or paired up to create more space to kick up your feet. They also have storage space for blankets or magazines and the top can act as a hard top tray or soft top to keep young kids safe like littlemsclimber wrote above. You can add some life to the wall with a photo gallery of your favorite pictures or some color with throw pillows and an area rug.
