Perhaps an espaliered fruit tree or an evergreen would look nice opposite the front door, as your guests stand on the front porch, while lingering in conversation with you as they say goodbye and head for their car.

Although it is still a mystery to us, you might want to enlarge your porch out to meet the walk, head on, and add a lamp post and bench.

You could add a lamp and bench at the sidewalk end, to make your approach more welcoming than your neighbors. You could have your coffee down there, with your morning paper, and get to meet your neighbors, without having to bring them within your home, - acquaintances, not yet friends.

Landscaping makes a significant impact when trying to boost up your curb appeal. I think it's a great idea to start fresh. We always suggest to start with planting the structural/larger trees/shrubs first to create a good base. This would include some evergreens as well to have a balance of some winter interest (depending on where you're located). After the structural shrubs are set, then you can think of perennials and grasses to add some color.

I also agree with Cambridge Pavingstones, a raised planter bed would look really good in your front yard. Since your yard slopes down, a raised bed would level out your planting area and create some structured levels.
