That area is a challenge. Do you plan on keeping your boots and shoes there once you make the changes? Are the curtains for light control and privacy or are they just decorative?

The decorator look is to have your curtains as long and full as possible. Which means you would try to hang your rod near the ceiling and outside your actual window frame so when the curtains are open you can see all of the window. You could use a 95" panel.

If your boots and bench will interfere with opening and closing of longer curtains you could consider a valance or roman shade. There are some nice modern valances available. Etsy has a really good selection. You might be able to get a pattern that you can also use on your sofa pillows. Though, if you are using grommets, I haven't seen a good selection of nice valances. Most grommet valances look pretty skimpy.

If you need privacy and light control, you can add some two inch blinds under the valance or get a navy roman shade that you can open and close.

I agree that drapes are impractical for that spot and would look cluttered. I would do a roman shade, wood blinds or if budget allows, a plantation shutter. If you have your heart set on drapes, I would have them be the same height as the other drapes in the room.

Dee, boots are optional, I'm still shuffling things around since we are at the tail end of our remodeling so I'm not exactly sure what will be most functional. We haven't had curtains for the 11 years we've been here, so they'd be mostly decorative items to finish the room. I'd like to come the end of this remodel with a house that looks like an adult lives in it, lol!

If you keep the bench, a nice long basket might work for shoes underneath. Put a towel to cover the bottom to catch any moisture.

I think it would be fine to have different window treatments in the entry and living area--especially considering the change in ceiling heights. I agree that your floors are lovely!

What is that thing in the sketch to the left side of the front door? Can you store your shoes in that? I would use a full length curtain on the window pictured and get rid of the shoes by moving them somewhere less visible.

Kswl2, that's a closet, representing most of the storage we have in the living space (next to the door by the 1/2 bath is a small utility closet full of cleaning supplies and tools, etc). Most of our shoes are in there already! Normally boots live in there too, but I'm hesitant to put wet boots in there in winter. The tray doesn't fit well behind the door anyway, so it may have to live in front of the closet or on the other side of the bench in winter.

I'll make the shoes works with whatever treatment would be most appropriate. It just needs to look right and be easy to maintain.

Boots or no, I would dress that window exactly like the others.
