I have never had this problem, my Milts seem to get smaller every year.

When I divide any plant, I look to keep back bulbs or growths in groups of at least 3. If you pry apart the bulbs you should see a short stem ( rhizome) connecting them. It's best use a pruner or sharp knife to cut the rhizome. They are pretty strong and if you try to pull them apart you sometimes end up breaking every part of the plant except the rhizome.

Never had luck with them in NY and haven't given them a try in Florida.

I always used a straight-edge to separate bulbs. A long time judge and grower always taught us to twist the bulbs and not cut. I was not good at that and used a straight-edge. Nice and clean and a bit of cinnamon always worked for me.

Did the deed! One division for my friend and the rest in a large pot. I used loose spag in the bottom of the pot, then a mixture of fine orchiata and about 1/4 large sponge rock. Hopefully they'll be happy, recover and thrive!
