It looks like it might be Alcantarea Imperialis Rubra or some sort of Imperialis. Where did you get it? You could contact the seller if you still know where they are, and they would probably know. It looks like it is native to Brazil.

Alyce - I agree with Lars; It's definitely an Alcantarea but which one I don't know as I don't have any experience with this genus. It is however a most attractive plant and a showpiece in your garden. How long have you had it and where did you get it?

Nev & Lars, Thanks so much. I purchased this plant in 1997 at a Bromeliad sale at FairChild Tropical Garden in Miami. It was in a one gallon pot. It's been in the same spot with no care no fertilizer just an eastern morning sun location. We purchased the villa in the picture in 1996 and we managed it as a vacation rental until 2013. We have a newly built home on the same lane and this past Christmas the new owners of Plumeria called me to come see their "Christmas Tree" I was amazed. It probably would have bloomed the 16 years we had the house if I had fertilized it. I have been checking under it every month to see if there any pups forming so far nothing. Now that I have the name I can try to find one. Thanks again
