They do add some interest but they weren't done particularly well. The top shouldn't hang out (it's supposed to look like it's actually supporting something) and IMHO they don't look right on a tile floor. I think I'd remove them.

I agree. But they appear to be centered on the beam, hence my hesitation in case they are actually load bearing. Want to be sure before I remove.

Can you see of there is a post inside the fiberglas column? Also do you have access to the attic above this spot to see if it is on a ceiling joist?

I cannot see to that point in the attic. The columns are hollow.

Wow, what weekend warrior created that mess! Guessing these are not structural as they are under a soffit. Almost anything would look better than that, but by all means get a professional opinion before tearing them out!

Anyone have a good recommendation for an engineer?

Some hollow fiberglass columns have substantial load bearing capacity and others don't. I'm not an engineer, but that says to me you need to either confirm that they aren't the kind of columns designed to carry load - assuming that is possible - in which case they aren't doing much anyway - or that the building design is sufficient without them and they are decorative only. I would go with the latter, given the possibility they were designed to be load bearing (regardless of what was actually installed....). Maybe the original builder or the building inspector could help you out? Good luck!
