Beach decor

We have been thinking about our forever home and after some searching we realized it is actually less expensive to move to the Eastern Shore then to stay in our DC suburbs.

We found a great home to rehab on the river with quick access to the Chesapeake Bay. We may need another year to actually start on a project so that home might not be available but am starting to think about decor/style.

We will definitely have a lot of visitors and want to focus on the outdoors.

We will focus on quality finishes but "decor" will be a Home Goods budget.

Any ideas for sophisticated, fun beach, river type decor? I am thinking lots of torquoise.

Turquoise is peaking, or has peaked already, at this point. If you're not going to start on the project for a year you may want to be open to other colors, as the abundance of Home Goods offerings depends upon what is in style at the moment. There will still be plenty of it around, but you'll probably find a color shift by next year to something else. If you are married to that idea and see something now that you absolutely love/must have, I would go ahead and purchase it.

Congratulations on your decision to go ahead and move ahead with your dream! I have not been to Maryland's Eastern shore but pictures of smaller towns along it are just lovely.

I live in a coastal area, and one caution I offer is to be careful about beach décor overload...if you love the style, and I certainly do too, there are a zillion décor shell/sun/beach related items one can pile on.

Personally I loathe the plethora of those beach cutesy phrases that seem to be EVERYWHERE especially in the Homegoods type stores. Pillows that say 'Live Love Beach' and twee turquoise-painted faux weathered wood plaques that say 'A Beach Day is the Best Day' and so on. If you have time before moving or decorating I'd start surfing around and really look at lots of beach house decorating examples.

Sorry for the double posts. I did want to make it more clear. I love Home Goods but I won't go buy out the store.....I don't want a retail store decor. It was more about our budget for decor after quality remodel and furniture.

I know turquoise is hot how and might not be later but I do think it is classic beach. I probably will use a lot of red. I was one of those people who was big into burgundy and hunter green and navy so I still pine for some red.

I don't want my home to be kitchy (did I spell that wrong?) but it does need to be comfortable.

I don't need sayings on my walls or pillows!

I go to Home Goods for china, cookware, lighting, etc. I know some people are snobby about it but they have stuff I could not or would not pay more for.

A few months ago a fellow shopper asked my opinion about lamps and it turned into a full on decor consult. I was so happy to see her pics on her phone and help her pic lamps out.

On the other coast, but in a coastal town and re-doing moms (91) old house to merge to a new style as I move in to take care of her, I have a few thoughts. We have a large garden so for me, slip covers are important. As hard as you try to not bring in the dirt from the garden, it finds a way. Slip covered furniture can look very beachy even if some are over the style. Because of the garden factor and since I sew, my seat covers are all a tan shade rather than white. I will probably end up with a second I can toss in the wash. I have had white/natural but over time was less happy with how they wore. I also know mom would not like a sea of white so I made the pillows and pillow backs a floral print I liked. Ours is a very old and small house. I did not want to chase fashion trends and picked out something that I thought had that vintage look. Mom has a big collection of cobalt, teal and turquoise glass wear plus has been collecting antique canning jars for 30 years. I am not done so no pictures, but guess what....

Turns out everything is now suddenly trendy and the colors is too. I know that in a couple of years, it will make my designs look dated and out of fashion. But, I know that the white shells in the mason jar are the same ones I collected with my boys as kids, the white coral my dad dove for in the 50's, the jars mom collected decades ago etc. Trends come and go, but looking at your home and how you want to live should dictate how you decorate. If I get tired of something or want to chase a trend, I plan on doing it with a new pillow cover.
