Beach decor

We have been thinking about our forever home and after some searching we realized it is actually less expensive to move to the Eastern Shore then to stay in our DC suburbs.

We found a great home to rehab on the river with quick access to the Chesapeake Bay. We may need another year to actually start on a project so that home might not be available but am starting to think about decor/style.

We will definitely have a lot of visitors and want to focus on the outdoors.

We will focus on quality finishes but "decor" will be a Home Goods budget.

Any ideas for sophisticated, fun beach, river type decor? I am thinking lots of torquoise.

I know Delaware is cheaper but in the area we want to be to be near other family members vacation homes it is cost prohibitive. Bethany would be the best option to be close to Fenwick or St. Martin's River area. I will definitely do some more research. We want to be able to visit family and restaurants by boat. That is what we do on vacation now and want to move to a year round vacation!

You might want to view images of homes of Alys Beach. The interiors are sophisticated, not kitschy, but relaxed and timeless.

You are probably familiar with local TV anchor, Wendy Rieger. She moved from DC to the Bay and she unabashedly embraced a Key West beach decor.

Thank you mlmlpadv. I do know of Wendy. That house is super cute...probably a little too cute for my every day home. If I understand it is her second home.

Basically, the idea is that we will keep our tiny place here and the shore home would be our primary residence. Where we are now is not a place that lends to entertaining or a lot of visitors....we are a good 30 minute drive through back roads to get here. We want to have lots of visitors and think since we already have family with vacation homes there we can have fun having others come during the peak season and in the winter we get our alone time.

I am actually excited about having ten people in a 3 BR home sleeping in the sunroom on Aero Beds....

Like I said it is probably a year out but I am excited and love to get the ideas.

Our current home is eclectic. My prior home was a Cape that was very traditional and some of those pieces and the Blue Willow China will go with.

Keeping the other home is for a year and see if we actually come back "home" a lot.

We have friends who live on the Eastern Shore of VA, in a gorgeous home with deep dock water frontage. The home is decorated with antiques, and is very formal in style, with the exception of the family room, which has a funky daybed in the picture window that overlooks the river. This is the back of the house:

bonnie, that is a gorgeous home! Probably above our pay grade but the dock and the views are what we are looking for. I cannot wait to be on the river!.

If you also like cottagey style in addition to turquoise, check out Flea Market Trixie's blog (although she's a bit more downscale compared to what's been posted in this thread):

Thank you writersblock, we will be midscale and I am not afraid of a bargain. It will be a house well lived in and I want it to not feel decorated but evolved and homey! Love the link.

If you like turquoise, have a look at the House of Turquoise blog!

We have a beach house and I had fun decorating it using a lot of flea market/consignment shop finds. More interesting stuff than Home Goods...though I have stuff from there too!

Thank you Sueb. The Home Goods reference was about price range for decor more than I would decorate entirely from there. Love the store but the fun is in the mix of old, new, flea market!

As an aside I stopped at Home Goods the other day to browse. I love to look at the china and kitchen gadgets. As I was leaving (empty handed! I should get a clap for that!) there was a woman leaving with three carts that appeared to be the entire decor for a family room.....I so wanted to stop her and say....no, no, no....
