Since you're selling soon, go with 4" and if the buyer wants new cabinets you won't have spent even an additional $400.00.

An extra $400 doesn't seem much for a neat looking backsplash that covers the entire counter cabinet space, compared the the short one, especially if that includes the installation. Think about the cost for tiling that backsplash wall instead, and see what you think. The cost-benefit decision partly depends on the market where the house is, of course. Where I live, people would think less of a kitchen renovation that did the 4 inch backsplash intead of the complete wall.

Maybe this is obvious but the other thing to think about is whether you like the granite pattern enough to live with it for however long you will be there.... or whether its appearance will irritate you subconsciously and you'll have to keep reminding yourself that you went with it because it was a bargain.

A sale price is not a good deal if the materials don’t work together. The counter and backsplash must work together, and that requires a color relationship. They must also relate to or go with the cabinet color. Do you want a dark kitchen or a kitchen with both light and dark features? If you have lots of windows, you can go with dark counters on dark cabinets, but if you only have a couple of windows, I would suggest lighter colored materials with espresso cabinets.
