Color Confusion

I've been having difficulty finishing decorating my bedroom. I've been looking at paint colors (remember, my walls want to be orangish?) for years without satisfaction. I finally realized my main problem is the yellow tones in my house.

For years, I've lived in apartments with white walls, and my decorating choices reflect that, with strong contrasts. Most of my existing soft goods were in jewel tones, for instance.

This does not work with the existing yellow toned walls, yellow and black laminate counters, and yellowish tile on the floors. Plus, I am a blue eyed blonde (a "summer") so I naturally gravitate toward pink/blue tones. I kept wanting to use my jewel toned bedding etc. and it just wasn't working.

I've managed to decorate my living area pleasingly with no problems, but I just don't want the same kind of colors in my bedroom. I still have no solution on paint, etc., but maybe I'm getting closer. Looking at blue and green colors now.

I spend so much time in my bedroom, and I'm just frustrated as all get out that nothing is working. I guess this is just a rant, since I'm sure I'll eventually get there, so thanks for listening.

Once you paint your walls that Caribbean orange you want, what yellow tones will there be to fight in the bedroom? Is there tile on the bedroom floor?

The tones in the bathroom -- a very small bedroom, and the bathroom's right there, so they need to coordinate. Not to mention a quite small house, so I don't really want to chop it up with colors like that.

BM soft fern is a wonderful green for a bedroom

Can we see a pic of the bathroom and the bedroom floor?

er . . . maybe when I get home! Bedroom floor is cheap brown carpet -- will need to change soon/eventually because of pets.

Violet, am I remembering right when I say you live in New Mexico or Arizona? Was it you who did that fabulous mosaic circles with rocks in your garden? The reason I ask is because New Mexico is famous for it's sunrises and when I was driving through there once many years ago I was so inspired by all the oranges in the soil, the skys, even the adobe buildings; I actually went home and painted my livingroom a soft apricot. Kiwi asked about the orange, so maybe you're already cosidering that direction. But I think a really soft and subtle apricot color on the walls could look really pretty.

yes, that's me; I played around with orange tones for quite some time and never found one I liked -- probably because I kept gravitating to "pink" orange tones which read "peach" and that's yucky.

As requested. Here's a pic of my bathroom showing the color walls, the tile, and the counter. This is actually my secondary bathroom but the materials are the same in the master. As a side note, my bedroom is quite dark, with only a small window, which may affect paint color choice.

I just don't know what I want; I keep vacillating between fairly neutral and fairly bohemian. So confused -- sorry!

Yes, it can be a hard color to find the "right" one with. I think lighting is important with it too. My living room had a lot of light and the color I chose was very faint sort of a white with and apricotish tint. It would provide the prettiest glow in the mornings.

You wrote two things in your original post that kind of stand out to me. First you said that you gravitate towards pinks and blues. I have always gravitated towards blue green and yellow. No matter how hard I try, whenever I stray, I always end up changing the room in question back to some version of that combination. So if those are the two colors you are comfortable with maybe you should surrender to one and use it with the neutral? Blues and browns are very pretty together. You also said you wanted to use your jewel toned bedding. Do you have a picture of your bedding as well?

yes, I'm leaning maybe toward blue or green. No, I really don't have a pic of bedding I'm comfortable sharing right now, though. I'm really just venting my frustration. I will get there!

I feel like the muddiness in the green (bathroom pic) may be an issue. I think if you pick a color (orange works) with the same muddy quality you will be OK. What is your bedroom flooring?

Oh, I see it is brown carpeting. What kind of brown?

there is no green in the bathroom other than plants -- poor pic, sorry. The walls are a light yellow toned beige (I have never been able to learn the color.) The carpet is dark brown.

More like the towel? Sort of camel? Dark brown allows all sorts of possibilities. Find a bedding you love that will work with the neutral you have in the bathroom, and then pick the paint.

Have you considered an orchid or dark lavender color for your bathroom? It doesn't seem like orange or peach would work in there. Then make your bedroom a richer version of that color.

Edit -- i missed that you said everything has yellowish in your house. The bathroom pic seems cool-toned on my screen (except for the walls). However, i still think orchid or amethyst might work :-)

I would love orchid or amethyst . . . but can confirm it won't work. I bought a linen duvet from RH in "orchid" -- which is a lovely blue-y mauve. I even had it cut down into a "summer cover" for reasons. But it really, really clashes. Really. So sad -- may have to sell it because I just can't use it.

Brownish warm grey? I thought your bathroom walls were green, too.

Maybe a good place to start would be to get color-accurate pics of the flooring, the counters, a close-up of the bedding...the things that you feel are dictating the choice of color.

What did the orchid clash with?

the color walls in the entire house, the hard surfaces in the bathrooms and kitchen. Remember - small house, 1500 sq, basically 4 rooms. Yellow beige walls, white trim, yellowish tile, dark brown carpet, yellow and black counters. Just cannot stick things with pink undertones and make them look right.

This is a link to "who's afraid of pink beige" that brought this into focus for me. I love the bedroom here, but it would clash with my adjoining bathroom and the rest of the house. Who's Afraid of Pink Beige

Yeah, sorry for the crappy pics. Very hard to get accurate color with my iphone ;).

Let's take your word for it, yellowish-beige throughout the home. I can understand wanting some flow :-)

I searched Houzz for "yellowish beige" in bedrooms. Maybe you can find some inspiration?

Black and purplish brown (or is that brownish purple?)

This is cool, they've got a bright rose chair in the room:

This looks like they have some cream, apple green, and periwinkle:

I'm sorry! Wish I could see in person. In my mind yellow beige goes with orchid but I trust it does not.

Orange, yellow, southwest sunsets. Makes me think of pic i saw where they painted their wall ombre.

Perhaps some art inspiration to combine the jewel tones with the oranges? I used orange in my PR based on Hunt's Lady of Shallot...in fact I used the soft fern on the ceiling. There really aren't any colors that don't go together and you can find examples of almost any color combo if you try, so it may be that you need to find the right inspiration, then the pieces will fall into place.

thanks to all. I'm gonna paint the whole thing mud brown. (frowns and kicks wall)

Have you tried any of the online color rendering tools, where you can upload a picture of your space and then add paint? I think it gives a good idea of what might look nice together, but it doesn't help you pick actual colors (IMHO) because they don't look the same IRL.

no I haven't; can you recommend a tool?

I just use the one from Benjamin Moore because you can upload your own photos. I'm not sure if it's the best or not, but I've been pretty satisfied with it:

    thank you

honestly, the more I read about color theory, and the more I look at paint colors, the more confused I am. I'll muddle through eventually.

okay here's where I get confused: to me, yellow is a "warm" color, and blue and green are "cool" colors; but if I'm looking at say, a green with a yellow undertone (to go with my yellow toned hard surfaces) -- would that be a warm or cool color?
