I see what you mean about the space being awkward. If the doors are not hanging evenly, you or a handyman could probably tinker with/replace the hinges and/or top hardware.

Short of bumping out a new porch to move the front door further away from the stairs, you're pretty much stuck.

I wouldn't obsess too much on the bi-folds -> Just distract people with a pretty bowl on the table & some nice art. The rug is a good touch. You need to clean your front door.

How about adding a little drama? Paint the inside of your exterior door and the closet doors black too. Leave the trim white. Add a fabulous flush mount chandelier. Fancy knobs (glass maybe?) on the closet doors. The entry table is a bit wide by the stairs. A floating shelf in black instead of the table. Then put the silver vase off the floor onto the shelf (without the sticks). Or, an interesting sculpture to look at. A pretty box to drop the keys and the sculpture only for simple elegance. Don't worry about the duct...you don't see it when the doors are closed.
