Freezing will ruin them. If you let the topsets to dry out a bit, I've just thrown them in a bucket to move them. If too wet they will mold. You can expand a start so easily, you really don't need many to get a good collection going in a new location.

Walking or tree onions are about as forgiving a perennial vegetable as there is.

Re: freezing the walking onions, I'm in zone 3 and my bulbils fall to the ground in the fall freeze all winter, and root in the spring. Maybe if the bulbils get a little more mature they could be put in the freezer???

There is no point. Walking onion bulbils can be planted just about any time, and they hold real well deep into the autumn. I think you will find that the ones that fall over in the fall actually start rooting then which is a bit different than freezing them in the house.

However, I am not saying they won't survive a trip through the icebox. Most of the varieties have very hardy and forgiving bulbils. You almost have to try pretty hard to actually kill them. Mostly I don't think it is necessary to take any special steps at all to keep them viable.

Old Dutch you are totally right! If not controlled the walking onions can become a weed!!
