Kitchen floor rugs

I love the way area rugs add color to the kitchen. Those of you who have rugs in your kitchen, what material is best? How often do you need to have them cleaned? Where are good sources? Have you had any problems with unnoticed spills, even of just water, damaging the wood?

I like a cotton rug that can be thrown into the washing machine. And something nontoxic. That would be the practical choice, but I also really love hooked rugs.

I also prefer something I can throw into the washing machine. I have 2 kids and 2 dogs so dry cleaning would become very expensive. Although that does limit your selection :( I put one at the entrance of the doors, in front of the fridge to catch the water and ice from the dispenser and one in front of the sink/dishwasher. One of my dogs drips water everywhere after drinking but so far it hasn't ruined the floor. Only their nails have scratched the floor...which I knew but still love my new wood floors. I think it is my favorite part of my new kitchen :)

I have hand-loomed rugs that a friend made. I have seen similar ones at art & craft shows/street fairs. They wash beautifully, but they do take a couple days to dry. I fold them in half and they are super thick and cushy to stand on. I have this one in front of my sink. I have one in front of the stove and one in front of the fridge.

This one below is folded now too making it really comfy to stand on.

Obviously the dogs like them too :)

I have several Turtle Mats near my entryways, kitchen and baths and they're great. Machine washable in a standard washing machine as well.

Thanks all for your experiences with kitchen rugs.

Debbi, my ancient dog would love to settle his joints on one
    of those hand loomed rugs!

I have in mind larger-than-washing machine size. This is
where I've been looking recently: area rugs

Tibbrix, I have a 12' oriental runner that I haul outside to
wash with cold water (I'm afraid of heat ruining the dyes). It washes quite
well, weighs a ton when wet and takes two days to dry. I used to have it
professionally dry cleaned once a year but it would be too expensive at this
point because Ancient Dog is not always making it outside. I'm sure glad I
found that I can wash it by hand!

Meh. Get an electric steam mop. they are GREAT. No more chemicals, clean floors really well, no hauling your Oriental outside to wash...

Debbi, cute rugs (and dogmas!). Do you put an anti slip mat under them? Or are they fine without it?

I looked into getting an LL Bean water hog mat for my sink area, but the backing is rubber, and my new flooring instructions say not to use rubber.

So now I'm thinking about Flor...

No I don't have a mat underneath. They do slide around, but I guess it's just habit as I walk by I move it with my toe (drives me nuts when they're not lined up right). The rugs on the site you posted, 12crumbles, are really expensive! Beautiful though! I do have an indoor/outdoor small (maybe 2.5x5) rug in front of my doorwall, which is in the kitchen. That one does have a non-slip thing underneath and it can be power washed with the hose outside and dries fast. (I'm not talking about the main rug the takes up most of this picture - that is a new rug for the dining room and I was trying to see what it looked like on hardwood floor). It's the brighter blue color with the dog bowls on it (they eat on this rug every day). (Sorry - apparently you need to click on this picture to see the correct indoor/outdoor rug.)
