Garage Trim Advice Needed

So I want to replace this smaller trim that borders my garage door with a wider trim (4-5 in all the way around) and I am looking for any suggestions regarding how to prep the perimeter of the trim so it looks flush against the house. Issue: the current garage molding butts right against the siding (picture 2) which is made of portland cement (asbestos). My idea is to remove the current garage trim and then use a circular saw to cut around the perimeter directly into the siding, remove the extra siding, then install the new thicker/wider trim around the garage. My question is, does this sound like a reasonable method? Should I be worried about cutting into the asbestos(anything airbourne, etc.)? Any helpful thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
