Kitchen Sink Layout

My new kitchen layout allows a guest to see the main sink from the foyer. The main sink has a very large window(over 6ft window) in front of it almost down to counter level. Is it awkward to see the sink from the foyer? I think I could move it down so you're not seeing the whole sink but then I'd have to loose my open shelving next to the hood over the range which is to the right of the sink. Both are important but I'm going to have to choose which is more important. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Probably depends on your dish washing habits. When we bought our house we closed up a snack bar pass-through that was open to the LR, because I didn't want to see the sink from the front door. Now I have a deep sink and runnels, so the drainer no longer sits on the counter, and any dirty dishes in the sink are out of sight. And my sink and faucet are purty.

Half of my fridge is visible from the front door, but in my small kitchen that's where it works best. I would choose function first, and I really like open shelving.

Do you often have dirty dishes stacked up around your sink? If so, then this may very well be one of those rare instances where I think form should trump function. I would not like dirty dishes being the first thing people see when they walk into my home.

Is there any way you could put a door b/w the kitchen and the foyer to hide the sink?

Hmmm.....Open shelving next to a range? Hopefully you plan for a good range hood so you don't end up with gunk (grease/dust/dirt build-up) on the items on the shelves. (If you store frequently used items on the open shelves that will be washed frequently, then I doubt there will be an issue.)

What kind of sink are you installing? Whenever we get to that point in my remodel, my clean-up sink will be on a peninsula facing my dining room. Once someone passes my initial entry space with a short wall, they could look to the right and see dirty dishes there, too. But I will be installing a 30" single sink, 9" deep. I plan to put anything that doesn't go directly into the DW into the sink so there is nothing piled on the counter. Although I keep up on the dishes and wash as I go, nobody else around here does so I'll have to train them to pile in the sink. I suggest you keep the floorplan the way you prefer it and just get a deep single sink! :)

Also, really, who doesn't have an occasional dirty dish once in awhile? I don't think people should be surprised that you use your kitchen. The type of person who would be shocked or offended by that wouldn't be welcome in my home anyway. Just sayin'.
