However, that sofa is probably far more worth the $2,000 they're asking than the others you've looked at. Keep in mind that moving sofas is a areal PITA there is value for these sellers in having someone move it for them, so it can't hurt to ask for a deep discount, phrased nicely and politely, not meant to insult but just it's what you're looking for but out of your budget…that sort of thing.

(Honestly, she should give it to you for the price of shipping it to your place. Sag Harbor, custom Chesterfield, linen fabric…puh-leeze).

One of my concerns about buying a sofa without sitting in it is comfort. I went sofa shopping yesterday and was surprised at how many fabrics were too nubby or rough. The other issue issue is fit, and you just can't find that out online. Is online your only option?

I concur regarding the sag harbor sofa on all counts. I will have to double check how long that listing has been on CL. It's like real estate unless the seller is REALLY motivated, he/she won't accept their first offer.

Teeda, I saw that leather Chesterfield too, I know exactly where it is, in South Buffalo. I've been debating on whether or not to contact the seller. my offer would be under $1k...I've got nothing to lose though!

Did you see the white leather one on CL Utica? I don't know where Averill Park is but there asking $1600 or reasonable for a Stickley...if you don't find anything soon Harden sometimes has a Fall sale...CNY here too.

Also, the slant of the back of that sofa I think you might not like. Chesterfield backs are 90 degrees from the seat, aren't they? Too much slant isn't comfortable.

Yes, Chesterfield backs are pretty much perpendicular to the seat. However I did sit on this sofa before in an Ethan Allen store and almost bought it until I begrudgingly realized I could not afford it. the slant didn't seem to bother me then. I actually went to a few furniture stores that day. From sitting on Raymour and Flanigan's chesterfield (SO uncomfortable) to the Ethan Allen's Chadwick and the Chadwick was very comfortable.

If you love the sofa, make them an offer! It's already been moved out to their garage, so they clearly need it gone. I'd start at $1,000. Good luck!

Just in case you don't get it, or if you need some bargaining power, the MS Saybridge at Macy's goes on super buy Wednesday for $889. I got an ad in the mail. Trying not to look too closely -- I've already ordered all I plan to.

I called my closest Macy's to see if any of my area stores have sofa floor models and the closest Macy's that does have a furniture showroom is in Albany which is approx 3 hours away. :-(

Still waiting to hear back from the seller if him AND his wife agree to my $1k offer on their Ethan Allen Chadwick sofa. I honestly think $1k is reasonable. They've had it for over a year and upholstery is like a new car, once you've owned it and/or have driven it off the lot, the value goes down.

After further thought I won't be totally heartbroken if I don't get it. The upholstery is a LOT lighter than I wanted and the nailheads are nickel instead of the bronze, copper or antiqued brass that I prefer.

So my search goes on in the meantime...

Hi Teeda, I went to Raymour and Flanigan a couple of weeks ago and that is a sofa I actually sat on...not comfortable at all!

So I see this sofa at Joss and Main...marked down to $899.95 so I immediately add it to my bag. Then of course they add the $150 "additional shipping charges" to it! Irritating because Joss and Main is a Wayfair company that's supposed to have special sales and Wayfair is cheaper, not by much though after tax but still. If only Joss and Main didn't have the $150.00 upcharge...then again I remember when Wayfair listed this same sofa for $939.00 less than 2 weeks ago. GRRRR....

Might be just me, but I simply do not trust retail (new) sofas that cost under

$3K, or thereabout. At $1K, we're talking particle board, plywood, staples…really poorly made and a bad value at $1K, whereas the $3K sofa made from hardwood, blocked and glued and screwed…is a MUCH better value.

I agree that the craftsmanship of a new sofa under $1k is more than likely lacking. Heck the new sofas I LOVE are $2700+ but I can't afford them. I was hoping to find a high quailty used sofa in great condition OR find a high quality one that isn't in great condition cheap and I would get it reupholstered. I just don't see spending more than $1k on a used sofa in great condition no matter what the quality is...it's used.

Wild- I saw that on joss and main this morning and thought it looked promising for you but I find the info they provide is really like pulling teeth.......and since you truly cant sit in it or know what it is ( at least I don't know how to find what it really is)... I didn't pass it along. I know they are reputable in that you will get what you ordered, but the delivery is also an issue. It says delivery to front door and assemble with screwdriver or enclosed tools. oh well. If you do look at some Rowe sofas, they do have a few with tufted backs and 2 cushions. I know the one I have is comfy and solid (but not a $3,000 sofa either)....... but that craigslist one looks perfect. I hope you hear back from then.

Re Ashley, it is confusing as there is a brand and a store. What I have seen at an Ashley store near me is that the stuff looks very nice, but seems to not be very good. If I recall, the cushions were not fully covered. The bottoms had Velcro so they would stay in place but you can not flip them.

That would be my only caution. If they are fully covered and it looks good, I guess it would be fine.

Good point sheilaaus122! I don't like cushions that aren't covered on both sides either. The sofa I saw on Joss and Main/Wayfair (more info about it on Wayfair.com) would be the first couch I've ever owned that had a stationary seat, no cushions to move at all. That part is intriguing but disconcerting at the same time.

15 years old, made by Sherrill Furniture (well made furniture, reputable company) looks like the same style/shape as my favorite Ethan Allen Chadwick sofa minus the upholstery fabric/color and fringe of course. That would all have to be changed once in my possession.

That is gorgeous. I'd even love it with just the fringe removed and some cream color pillows.

I ended up buying this used but well taken care of Sherrill sofa (down seat cushions) for $300 (originally listed for $400). I will eventually have it reupholstered but it's something I can live with for now. It's in Long Island now and I hired a shipper to bring it to me. Will be here in a little over a week! :-)

I did get the Sherrill sofa. With the exception of the fabric I'm happy with it. I can't wait to get it reupholstered! The style/pattern is just too victorian for me. Unfortunately, I've had a recent financial setback so the reupholstering is on hold for now. The sofa is quality is excellent and the springs are great. I do wish the seat cushions were more firm but for them being 100% down AND 15 yrs old, it's in pretty good shape.
