Word to the wise re: AJ Madison Appliance Installation

When my DB's electric cooktop died, he decided to switch to induction, and he needed a new wall oven, too. He ordered from AJ Madison, and they told him they would arrange installation of both "at the time of delivery by certified installers." They said installation would cost $125 for the cooktop and $175 for the oven, but that he would pay the trucking company directly on installation. When the truck arrived, the deliverymen disavowed any knowledge of a planned installation. They said they thought they were supposed to give an estimate for installation, and they didn't have any of the tools or kits necessary for actual installation. DB let them leave and contacted AJ Madison, who contacted the truckers. The truckers told AJ Madison that they couldn't do the installation because the openings were the wrong size for the appliances and more work was needed on the cabinetry than they could do. Since they did not measure any openings or review any installation manuals (the boxes were not opened) and since the old wall oven was still in situ, this could not have been the case. AJ Madison apologized for the "miscommunication" between DB and the truckers, and offered him a $50 credit on his card for his inconvenience. DB found someone else to do the installation next week.

AJ Madison didn't do too awfully badly here - they responded very quickly, and $50 is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. OTOH, AJ Madison offered installation, installation did not happen, and now installation is delayed. I expect AJ Madison offers installation as a way to further compete with local appliance stores, who do actually provide installation on delivery. If you need an appliance installed, though, it might be safer to try to negotiate with the local store to get the AJ Madison price on the appliance and pay them to do the installation. You'll probably get it sooner, too. If you do order from AJ Madison, you might be better off to arrange your own installer.

You're probably better off having a local installer do the installations than some out of state truck drivers/delivery men especially when it comes to built in appliances.

AJMadison is a reputable company. They however use a trucking company with lightly trained personnel when it comes to training. When it comes to a basic electric range or refrigerator, no problem. For built in stuff, you are better off with a smaller local guy who does their installations. They will be better equipped to handle the possible iterations that occur.

Sometimes it pays to pay more in this instance. Just like with contractors the cheapest and quickest, rarely ends up cheaper or easier.

I agree, AJ Madison is reputable, and they have great prices, and I think they sincerely tried to be responsive to the problem here. But they created the problem; they shouldn't offer installation if they don't have process capability. We're all in agreement, though: hire a local installer.

Any time your cabinetry needs to be cut, or electrical needs to be done, you for sure don't want a truck driver to do it. And that is why local appliance stores who have trained staff that can do that are often a better bargain in the long run. You really aren't going to be able to hire those folks for ''just'' the install when you bought the appliances elsewhere. Finding anyone else to do both cabinetry and electrical with equal skill is a big crapshoot.

You're right, Sophie, you wouldn't expect a long distance truck driver to also be a highly skilled appliance installer. Which is why I'm surprised that AJ Madison calls their truck drivers "certified installers." I just wanted to warn people that no matter what AJ Madison tells you, they probably cannot provide installation, beyond the most basic, for your replacement appliance. They're a great source if you have a contractor doing a remodel, though, and if you're outside of NYS, no sales tax. Of course I wouldn't expect local stores to come out and install the unit you bought at AJ Madison, but you can sometimes get them to come down to the AJ Madison price for the appliance. And you're also correct - it isn't easy to find your own handyman who can do carpentry and electrical or plumbing and is willing to do just a small installation. That's why DB was happy when AJ Madison offered installation, because he could buy from them without finding his own installer. Which he has now had to do anyway.

This was just a case of live and learn for my DB, and I was hoping to help other people avoid making the same mistake.
