Is this a weed or plant?

This appeared in the garden for the first time this summer. I'm not sure what it is. It's the only one of it's kind and seems it would be extremely hard to pull out.

It will become woody - it is still a baby at this point :-) You could transplant later this season (early fall) or early next year or you could locate and plant one of the new sterile cultivars on the market, most of which have a very compact growth habit compared the species.

Agree with Buddleia - weedy to the point of being an invasive species in some parts of the country, as its popping up unannounced in your garden can attest to. Where are you located?

I'm on Long Island, NY. I did have 2 very mature butterfly bushes on my property, but they died in the aftermath of Sandy. They were very woody compared to this plant, so I guess I didn't connect them. Thank you. I wonder if I can transplant it somewhere else, it's in a very bad spot for a plant that could get very large.
