Russ: here is another clearer picture of the " roseo-picta medallion"( not positively IDed) . I got it from BBS with a not very informational tag. I think somebody on GW IDed it for me. I can send it to you if you are interested. Although I need to research how to pack plant for mailing them first. :)

Laticauda: I think one of this issues is the common name causes confusion. Like myself do not know what jade hahnii is and images searching actually add more confusion into it.

Fred: so I am guessing you are collecting Sans (from your user name)? Do you have more pictures of your sans to share with us? ( I love to look at pictures of others plants if you can not tell already :))

Rockdale, I have a few posts scattered over on the Sansevieria forum, have yet to get around to making a "family portrait" though, LOL! Sans are my favorite plant. I have a few pictures on my profile too.

The 'jade' talked about in the last few posts is 'Jade Dwarf'. Fred is right, it does propagate true from it's leaf cuttings. 'Jade Dwarf Marginated' is the variegated form with creamy white margins, sometimes butter-yellow. The interior green is solid dark green with no banding. Definitely different than regular Hahnii, which has banding. Leaf cuts from 'Jade Dwarf Marginated' lose the variegated edge and produce 'Jade Dwarf'.

Rockdale, if you plan on throwing out that roseo-picta I would take it. I haven't grown calathea's or any of it's relatives in decades. You sure picked a tough group to grow up there in Rhode Island, they need a lot of humidity. That said, most of them are show-stoppers.

Rockdale, that looks like a mixed orchid-growing material in your pic of medio-picta. Are you growing in that or is it just a top dressing. I love that stuff but it's a bit pricey to use in bulk.

I think I killed the last plant I tried to give to someone else to hospital it. She convinced me to keep it and take a cutting. Cutting rotted. Just the stem left. In the pot. Letting it dry out a good bit. I'm getting upset a little bit, I don't wanna talk about it lol.

I'm assuming this might not be a sans, what is it? I hate it when things go south like that.

Drymonia ecuadorensis. A gesneriad. I have the stump left from where I took the cutting. It's not mushy and doesn't pull out of the soil, so maybe there's hope for it yet. I didn't actually buy the plant, but it would have been a really cool plant!

That sounds like a cool plant, I'll have to look it up. Most people don't know the diversity of that group of plants, there are some wildly interesting and beautiful plants. 'Firm' is good regarding the stump, hopefully there's at least one bud underneath that can break and put out a plant.

Yesterday was busy, didn't get to do much fun stuff. Glad you got that extra rest, you must have needed it.

oh, the soil, I am using gritty mix I learned from this site, basically, 1 part of chicken grit(crushed granite),1 part of pine bark fines and 1 part of turface, all particle size should between 1/8 -1/4" ideally, pine bark fine can be 1/8-3/8". But it is hard to find bark fines around here, the one I got are a little on the larger side. So when watering they are always floating to the top. This mix helps a lot in the winter to avoid overwatering.

Rockdale, if you have the box stamped 'Perishable' at the Post Office, it should be fine. That should keep it out of the sun and heat. I use the Priority boxes provided by the PO, the regular or Flat Rate depending on weight. The things you're shipping shouldn't require a Flat Rate.

You can send succulents if you wish, I have a small collection of left-overs from past larger collections. You don't have to send pics, a list would be okay if you know what they are.

As long as you wrap the washed roots with damp paper towels or newspaper and wrap that with plastic wrap or a Walmart-type bag, it should be okay. On tropicals I put the bundles in a bigger bag to hold moisture, then stuff that in the box. With sans, I send bare-root. Talk about easy.

I really like hostas, but they don't do well here. That one's got some great variegation going on. Hybridizers have created some fantastic hostas, rippled leaves, chartreuse colors, very neat stuff.

I had some in my north yard until winter + dogs happened.

Not a very good combination for tender plants! Not sure which would be worse, maybe depends on the size of the dogs...

Landscaper guy says it doesn't matter you can't have dogs and a yard. Dogs have claws that tear up the ground like cleats as they are tearing ass around the backyard.

At first it just looked like goat trails...then I got chickens. The neighbors don't have to edge against our fence line, so they are happy about that.

I don't think they like really hot temps, or maybe it's the high night temps. But also everything that creeps and crawls here in Fla eats hostas. Snails, slugs especially. So leaves are always half-eaten, or with holes or chewed edges.

I actually saw a white-variegated hosta for sale somewhere recently, maybe Lowe's or Home Depot. So they're occasionally available here.

The pebbley quilting that this hosta shows is very nice, I've seen it before. Don't know if it's a new development, but the texture adds to it's attractiveness.

Russ have you ever tried to grow one in a pot on a screened in porch? Just asking, I don't ever remember seeing Hosta down in Florida

Never have, mostly because I don't have a screened porch and lived here 22 years. But that's a great idea, no slugs, no snails. I've thought about screening in my shadehouse to keep the squirrels out, but that might be too shady for hostas.

Now that we've talked about hostas, I'm noticing them fairly often at stores now. But always the same kind with white variegation.

Some new photos

It's already producing pollen, I'm going to try to cross it with elegans, but that black beauty also has a spath getting ready to open. There was an open and probably fertilized one on there, but it got wet and I could smell that it wasn't right so took that one off. But it appears this plant has TWO more flowers on it. What a prolific bloomer. I'm surprised this hasn't overtaken spathiphyllum as far as houseplants go.

not all that clear, was just reacting to your speculation that that is what it is. No clue what the white gunk is. sorry.

I can't tell what it is, if it's clear then it's not mealies. But the stuff on the plant looks white, so maybe a better pic would help.

I don't think mealies are that bad, actually. While I don't like chemicals, there are systemics that will clear them up fairly quickly. I don't see them very often and I stay on top of that kind of thing. I'll sometimes unpot a plant and spray the whole thing, roots and all, with a fine, hard spray from the garden hose. Have to be sure to get down in the space where the petiole attaches to the stem. But that usually does the trick.

I just did a treatment to all the plants/areas. It was about time anyway.

No real news today, my shades/black beauty has started to open the spath.

And another close behind. This had three inflorescenses but one got wet and yuck during shipping.

I think either shipping got the spadix wet or this variety doesn't make pollen or something. The spadix is not normal looking at all, it looks spent and old.....probably the water from shipping. That's okay, there's one more inflorescence (yes, that makes a total so far three on this particular plant) that was more closed up during shipping and hopefully protected.

I have something to use for now....but it's in protest.

So let's see what happens with the other inflorescence. I'm glad you are at least able to communicate with us.

I pulled the other inflorescence, nothing was going to come of it, maybe now the tiny third one will get bigger, must remember to give dose of fertilizer to this pot soon and not be a slacker about it cos Ags love to eat.
