What do I do with my gambrel roof?

Attached are 4 views of my house (from each side). We moved in last year and while we like the house it needs an update. As you can see it is kind of a Dutch colonial in very traditional colors - red brick, white siding and trim and black shutters. We are basically stripping it down and recovering it, meaning roofing and siding. What options do I have for the roof? I was thinking maybe shake shingles on the down sloping roof (the mansard part) and regular asphalt shingles on the top (the gable). I'm also thinking about what type of siding to put on - color and style - maybe a blue/gray clapboard. Does anyone have a similar experience to share? Please help with any suggestions you have. Thank you
