Onions flowering

For the first time I can recall, my (Copra) onions are flowering.

I'm mildly curious why (the spring was cold but I didn't think cold enough to fool the onions into thinking it was winter) but I'm more interested in whether I should cut the flowers off or not to increase bulb size.

The onions have just begun to flop within the last day or two, but the flower stalks are standing tall. Is it safe to assume that cutting the flowers off will direct more energy into the bulbs? That seems obvious but I can't find any mention of it anywhere online, thus the question.

Thanks.
