Stressed Maple

Hey all. I have a mature maple that has developed a large crack and considerable amount of brown sludge coming out. When I discovered it, I ran my finger through the the sludge and found small larvae on my fingertip. Cannot find anything online. Any clues? It is dark now, otherwise I would attach a picture.

Sounds like maybe slime flux/ bacterial wetwood and insects laying eggs where it's moist. Picture very helpful.

Here are some pics. I think that you are correct about insect species moving in on the moist food source. From what I read I am not to do anything and let the tree take care of itself. Is there any danger to the tree at all? I have multiple maples on the property all serving their purposes. Would hate to lose any one of them
