Try this question in the Container gardening forum - those experts have dealt with this before I bet.

I garden pretty extensively in containers. Some are elevated; some are not. I don't really worry about drainage because of the quality of the potting medium I use - it is very durable and textural with a lot of porosity so drainage is always sharp. If I were using a less textural potting soil - something like Miracle Gro or other very finely textured, dense material - I would be more inclined to want to enhance drainage any way I could and would probably elevate my containers.

There are lots of ways to elevate a container - bricks or masonry blocks, pieces of 1" or 2"x2" wood, pot "feet" made expressly for this purpose or metal plant stands.

Many pots have a small ridge formed on the bottom that prevent a pot from resting perfectly flat against a surface. All that is needed is a fraction of an inch for excess water to freely drain.
