If I had more energy tonight, I'd put a table and a lamp in the corner and find a more suitable coffee table, but you get the idea here. I'd skip the big brown couch. Go lighter and more neutral and your room will feel brighter and more cheerful. Your rug should probably be about as large as shown below.

You could put a sofa in front of the window, another facing it, rectangular coffee table between them, and a chair or two on the end under the art.

Sofas with legs will make the room feel lighter.

agree with groveraxle! and get rid of those vertical blinds, gosh those things are awful!

I would suggest a chaise sofa with chairs and small ottoman set up like grover has it.

Ellen, I'll bet you can find a really comfy couch in a lighter color that isn't quite so huge. Try a lighter rug, maybe a small recliner instead of two chairs.

Get two sofas or love seats, one for each of you. Put one under your art and one under the window. You could also put one under the window and the other facing the window. With love seats facing each other you might still have room for a chair or two. As miacometlady suggested get a more neutral color, and use your art to choose colors for your pillows. Get a different rug, it looks like flower petals and seams to compete with the art not complement it.

Please do not get loveseats. You cannot lie down in them and they are not functional for arranging a room. Agree with grover, there are plenty of comfortable and functional sofas out there, so take your time and look around. IF you are unsure, take a photo, post and ask for advice.

Ellen, only you can decide what furniture fits your comfort needs and how to orient it for best TV watching. But there are a few suggestions I can give to make the space more appealing.

Go much lighter and more neutral on upholstery and rugs. Your art and one or two vibrant pillows are enough to punch up the space. More than that becomes overbearing and anxiety inducing.

Open the windows. If the view isn't good, cover them with light filtering shades, but get some natural light in the room.

Seating with legs will open the space and reduce the heavy feeling.

Here are some good looking sofas that would lighten the space. I chose them because they also look comfy, but you really always need to do your own sit test first.

I would look for a creamy colored sectional (with two areas for lounging) but in a smaller scale then what you have now, a large natural jute or sisal rug, floor and table lamp to add interest, and less pillows. Your room and that corner in particular will feel so much lighter. Perhaps if the store doesn't have a specific couch you want, they will have catalogues from which you could order.

I like both (and the colors as well) but are they the same size as your first sectional and you'll be in the same situation with its size? Perhaps in a ligher color and with a lighter, larger rug, one will work better. Good luck in your decision.

Sectional sofas typically work one of two ways. THEY TAKE UP TOO MUCH ROOM and are NOT Versatile.

If the room had a proper furniture layout plan, You would be able to make better choices. Working with an interior designer then you selections that work best for you. Asking someone their unpaid opinion gets many results. Many Opinions.

I would be happy to do a floor plan for ellen, but she has gotten some good advice and appears to want a huge sectional. It appears that whether it is free or she pays for it will make no difference.

Ellen, while I think your room will look better without a sectional, if that is what functions best for you, then that is what you should get. Both of those light sectionals are miles better than the dark brown. Before you bring one home, though, please measure carefully so you know exactly how it will fit.

Sectionals limit your placement options.

IMO the print for the ottoman and both solid and print for pillows. But another thing to think about is that the solid for ottoman would give you more options for color. Say blues or turquoise. Changing out pillows is easier than ottomans.

I wouldn't do an ottoman. I'd do a much lighter coffee table, get some legs in the room. Textured curtains (light burlap or linen), ivory shag rug, a few pops of color from the art... IMO, this room needs lightening, softening, and toning down.
