I collected seeds from my Portulaca (Happy Hour Mix), but like SMC I'm new to this. I'm not aware of any other Portulaca plants nearby, but I gather that related plants don't need to be in very close proximity to cross pollinate. I'm fine with planting the harvested seeds and seeing what I get, but I have interest in participating in the Seed Exchange. Does one always need to take preventative measures to avoid cross pollination or are there growing situations or particular types plants that it is safe to collect seeds from without worry of creating Frankenstein flowers? I understand how cross pollination would be very undesirable when growing veggies, heirlooms, or rare varieties, but does one need to be so careful about collecting seeds from common decorative plants, or herbs? If it is explicitly stated that measures were not taken to prevent cross pollination and that the plants grown from the seeds may exhibit different characteristics than the variety they were harvested from is it permissible to offer the seeds on the Exchange? It's easy. I place a WHITE container under a dried flower head and pinch off the brown seed pod. The seeds are SUPER TINY. Then I just open the seed pod in the white container.
