Should I carpet the stairs?

The house we're in the process of buying has wood stairs. They are the basement stairs but our living area will be down there so we'll be going up and down a lot. The stairs squeak which might get annoying. Would it be better to carpet them? Would that help with the noise?

Carpeting the treads will not fix the squeeks. It may lessen the noise a bit, but if i was a gambling man i wouldnt put a penny on it.

The sqeeks are coming from the treads rubbing against the stringers.

To fix, couple of options. re-nail. that may do the trick at least in the short term. The thing i would try is drilling a hole directly about each stringer (probably have 3 stringers) and pump epoxy into the hole. then re-nail the tread. Of course you could also remove the treads and glue and then re-install, but that can be difficult and may require touch ups to paint or trim.

Now if the treads are in rough shape and you know for a fact that you'll never have them re-finished and dont care about the appearance, then screw the treads to the stringers.
