How is the quality and condition of the cabinets and counters? They look pretty good in the photo. If so, I would be inclined to change the window treatment, light, cabinet handles(!), add new bisque appliances and call it a day.

You're fortunate to have what look like natural hardwood floors and quite a bit of cabinetry for the size of the space. I would recommend light cream cabinets to make it feel more open, a medium tone countertop that includes the cabinet color and some of the golden brown tones from the floors, and a new backsplash that complements the two.

Cabinets are in decent shape but having never refinished/painted cabinets before I'm not sure if I'm ready to take on that big of a project. The cabinet handles are not a standard size which makes it hard to just switch out the hardware. We will either buy cabinets new from Home Depot or Refinish what we have.....anybody have experience in refinishing cabinets? Is it as hard as it looks?

Thanks elle71tpa! I really like cream cabinets. The room gets a lot of natural sunlight so that would really lighten up the room!

You're welcome. I did first think you could have the cabinets re-finished to a light cream but, as you said, it would be: quite a bit of work to do it yourself, money to have someone do it, and having hardware that fits.
